Although Quebec has a low population density (less than 5 inhabitants per square kilometre), 80% of us choose to live in urban centres along the Saint Lawrence River. There may be economic reasons to pack ourselves tightly along such a relatively narrow stretch, but given our cold and long Canadian winters, it may well have something to do with keeping warm.
As a photographer, I often rely on the sights of foreign lands and people to guide me in making images. It's more natural to react to something unusual than to pick out interesting things in the familiar. But, it's extremely rewarding to set out expecting the familiar and encounter the opposite.
Leaving Montreal behind as I headed east toward the town of Perce at the tip of the Gaspe Peninsula, my excitement grew at each stop along the way. From the European charm and coziness of Quebec City, to the spectacular views along route 132 in the Gaspe Peninsula, everything was a surprise. It made me realize just how beautiful Quebec is and how much there is to explore close to home.
